PSP Ashokan Pumped Storage

Located in upstate NY using the Ashokan reservoir and proposes an alternative for the construction of an upper reservoir with a total area of 226 acres and a volume of  25,558 acre-ft that can be built in the surrounding area, as can be seen in figure 1. The proposed interconnection uses 230kV transmission lines linking the new substation with the existing Hurley Av. Substation as shown in Figure 1.  According to our reservoir alternative, the project could generate the following:

For supply 1,200 MW and 2,000 MW when it is necessary (pumping 1,680 MW and 2,800 MW, respectively) so we need 5 new pump-turbine generator-motor sets. Each unit would have a nominal rating of 560 MW. A longer duration of pump storage operation or energy storage is possible, but it could affect the level of the Ashokan Reservoir beyond the 2ft maximum we propose.

The area shown in Figure 1 is near Catskill Park and there is an extensive forest and wild area, so we have taken all necessary measures to avoid interfering with the wilderness by locating our proposed upper reservoir away from natural areas also doing undergrounding the connections between reservoirs to not interfere with landscapes as shown in Figure 2 in this way the consortium provides an eco-friendly solution.

Shoreham Pumped Storage

The Shoreham pumped storage project will provide energy storage to the New York and New Jersey areas. The project would leverage abandoned mines and quarries in the Connecticut State to create a new upper reservoir. The Long Island Sound would serve as lower reservoir. Water from the Long Island Sound would be pumped to the new upper reservoir to store excess intermittent energy from the regional grid. Then, the potential energy would be converted to electric energy by releasing the water back to the Sound.

The project would provide energy storage up to 3,000 MW-h. The plant would be rated at 500 MW with a maximum continuous power generation output of 6 hours. The proposed pumped storage powerhouse would be cavern-type, located underground, adjacent to the existing decommissioned Shoreham power plant. A pressure tunnel would connect the upper reservoir to the underground powerhouse, which would take water from an intake at the Long Island Sound.

The upper reservoir capacity would be between 6,500 acre-ft and 8,600 acre-ft depending on its alternative location. Preliminarily, three tentative locations have been identified for the upper reservoir construction. These locations were once active mines and quarry but have now been abandoned. Further investigation and studies are required to select a feasible location for the upper reservoir and determine an adequate size for operation based on the abandoned mine or quarry dimensions.

Figure 3 presents the three alternative locations for the upper reservoir and the straight distances to the proposed Shoreham pumped storage plant. The alignment of the pressure tunnel would be determined based on the site topography and optimized to reduce hydraulic losses.

The pumped storage plant rating, operation time, and energy storage capacity are detailed in table 3. The plant capacity will vary depending on the available hydraulic head and the storage capacity of each upper reservoir alternative.
